The Job Dangers of Blogging
Wired News has a December 6, 2004 article suggesting that "Blogs May Be a Wealth Hazard".
Rachel Metz reports on the plight of three bloggers who have lost their jobs through their blogging activities:
1. Ellen Simonetti (then a flight attendant at Delta Airlines) for "Delta photos" on her blog Queen of Sky
2. Michael Hanscom (then a Xerox temp working at Microsoft in Redmond) for "Microsoft photos" on his blog eclecticism
3. Heather Armstrong (then a web designer in Utah) for posting material about the people she had worked with to her blog Dooce
Judging by these three cases it would appear that two things are required to help eliminate such situations:
1) good judgment by employees on what they should and should not post to their blogs relating to their employment activities, and
2) company posted policies on blogs, identifying job-related blog postings which are undesired and which could (or would) lead to firing.
As a general rule of thumb in life generally: do not bite the hands that feed you or you may wind up hungry.
